“Sheherzade’s Secret”

(Charcoal, 2005, Mumbiram)

More often than not, the titles to Mumbiram’s artworks are enigmatic. Sheherzade was the Grand Vizier’s clever and wise daughter who volunteered to marry the Sultan even after he had beheaded every bride he married till then. She narrated a thousand and one tales to her sister Dunyazad while the Sultan listened. The Sultan fell in love with Sheherzade and made her his Queen. Dunyazad married the Sultan’s younger brother who was the Sultan of Samarkand.

Coming to these two handsome ladies of the Gutenberg Galaxy one wonders who is telling the secret to whom ? And what could that secret they share be ?

But look at them again. The expressions in their eyes show great trust in each other. They are bare breasted. Simple ornaments adorn their necks and arms. They certainly share a spirit of great enlightenment.

It seems almost too beautiful to be real. Yet such unbelievable meetings and incredible happenings were common occurrences in Mumbiram’s legendary atelier at the downtown Mandai market of Pune. Imagine, these two have first met, and have been meeting ever since, in this artist’s studio. Nobody was noticing this awesome dark beauty on the streets of Pune. The artist found her to be irresistible. What magic what chemistry worked for her to become a regular visitor to the artist’s studio no one will ever know. The fair lady here has traveled to India to find her inner self, a purpose in life, the way to God, etc. etc.…. And here she arrived right at the very depth of the Highest Secrets of True Love. An artist’s studio, run down yet kept alive through various visitors from the most unique and unusual places. Where his muses live and where international art lovers find this artist no one will know.
That this artist was making such paintings in India is a miracle in itself. One feels Indian society and its suppressed sexuality would never allow such visions.

Yet Mumbiram had achieved something miraculous in his legendary studio. His paintings show pure innocent eroticism, so pure and beautiful that in his art even nudity is truly in the spirit of worship. In his art one experiences a spirit of transcendence that elevates every mundane detail to the heights of the spiritual and timeless.

So relax and appreciate this beautiful vision of intimate feminine sensitivity. Isn’t this dark beauty squeezing the arm of this fare damsel rather too firmly ? She must be sharing something truly exciting. The fair lady is surely enjoying this extraordinary company. She herself is showing exemplary maturity and love but she has a lot to learn from the loving ways of her dark beautiful friend also. It is entirely possible that they don’t even know each other’s language. It hardly matters in the magical atmosphere of this Rasa artist.
