Collector’s Item Canvas Print of Original Masterpiece “Surprise Meeting on the Way back from the River” by Mumbiram
Most of the women that inspired Mumbiram‘s art regularly carried heavy weights overhead. Mumbiram admired their great erect postures when they walked. Mumbiram was attracted to whatever reminded him of the cowherd boys and girls in Vrindavan. This depiction is reminiscent of Krishna accosting the Gopis. But there are differences to be noticed. Like all other masterpieces of Mumbiram the grace and economy of the line is exquisite. Yet the detail where it appears is so accurate.

“Surprise Meeting on the Way back from the River”
(Charcoal on cotton-rag hand-made paper, Pune 1987, Mumbiram)
Some of the sweetest episodes in the adolescent Krishna’s youthful sporting are about Krishna accosting the Gopis on their way back from the river with pitchers full of water overhead or on their way to Mathura with pitchers full of milk and yogurt overhead. Even though the Gopis dreaded such encounters they also secretly wished Krishna would honour them with such an ‘accident‘.
‘The Gopi’ here is much darker than Krishna.
Krishna has rushed to the Gopi with great alacrity. The garlands and silk cloth around his neck are trailing. The tassels around his waist are flying. Krishna has barely touched the Gopi’s hips. The Gopi has been quick to react to this certain attack. But will she be successful in saving the pitcher overhead ? Have you noticed Krishna’s left hand grabbing the Gopi’s left forearm ?
Mumbiram’s Gopi is strong and fit. Not delicate and vulnerable.
It is Krishna who is the delicate one.
All this makes this depiction a wonderful example of the ‘Prema Vivarta’ mood.
Experiences in the material world remind a Krishna lover in the prema vivarta mood of incidents in the lives of cowherd boys and girls of Vrindavan.
Like all other masterpieces of Mumbiram the grace and economy of the line is exquisite.
